Gaming Life UK - IGNShare. Videogames.. in an Art Gallery? By IGN Staff Hello again. Amongst all the World Cup fever that's gripping the nation at the moment there's a surprising amount going on. The news of two game shows within a week of each other in London brought news of another one that's on right now. This one though is of a completely different type to the trade shows, ECTS and GDC Europe.
You'll have to read on to find out more. Also before we move on, congratulations to England on beating Argentina! They deserved that win and laid a couple of past ghosts to rest in doing it. I just hope that they don't get too cocky against Nigeria. Xbox Ad Banned. During the week the ITC (Independant Television Commission) banned Microsoft's Xbox advert entitled "Champagne." The ad which was frequently shown on ITV showed a woman giving birth.

The baby was fired out of her and out the window where it flew through the air, rapidly aging and screaming, and crashed into a grave as an old man. It carried the slogan "Life Is Short. Play More." The ITC chose to ban the ad after receiving 1. The offended viewers included twenty people who had recently lost loved ones, several pregnant women, and one person who has lost their baby during childbirth. Microsoft protested, saying that the slogan was making a positive statement, but the ITC said that "The man's screams throughout his life's journey suggest a traumatic experience, which, together with the reminder that life is short, made the final scene more shocking." In a warning to the Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre who approved the ad before it was shown, they added, "The final scene of a body smashing into its grave was unnecessary and caused considerable distress to many viewers." Personally I think it's just people being over- sensitive and too easily offended, as usual for things like this.
If you want to, you can drop me a line about this here. Let me know what you think. If you missed the ad on TV you can still download it at Playmore. ITC has no powers over advertising there, but in the meantime here are some images taken from it: If you want Quicktime movies of the ad to go with it you can find them on Microsoft's Xbox site: Small (2. The highest new entry this week was Soldier Of Fortune II: Double Helix, the super- violent sequel to the super- violent PC FPS, Soldier Of Fortune. The only other new entry apart from a couple of re- entries was Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. This huge RPG has gotten almost unanimous rave reviews from everyone and if your PC can handle it, it's probably worth considering. There is an Xbox version due on 3.
August so take your pick. Game On: The Culture and History of Videogames.
Since last week's article on ECTS and GDC Europe it has come to my attention that there's a totally different type of show also running in London, and it sounds like every game enthusiasts wet dream. The exhibition, called Game On, is being held right now at the Barbican Gallery in London. Running until 1. 5th September, the show explores the history of video games between 1. It shows the process involved in making a game from conceptual drawings through to the final game, and shows the evolution of consoles from the room- filling behemoths of the 1. It also shows the influences of games on international popular culture, and has several commissions from artists, architects, and designers that have been inspired by games.
There are 1. 5 sections in the exhibition: Early Arcade Games - - The main attraction here is what it generally considered to be the first video game ever made, Space War. The game will be shown, as well as the original code of the game. Also playable versions of vintage arcade games such as Pong, Space Invaders, Asteroids, and Pac- Man will be present. Alongside the games there will be rare items such as original advertising for the games, and even some merchandise. Game Consoles - - Pretty much every home console will be on display here, from the original Magnavox Odyssey right through to today's current consoles. Many will be playable.
Games Families - - Here games are divided into three sections - Thought Games, Action Games, and Simulation Games, with a total of 3. Games on display will include Monkey Island, Dragon Quest, Virtua Fighter 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Sim City. The Making and Marketing of Games - - This will display several of the biggest games of all time all the way through their development from original concept to final packaged game.
Never- before- seen artwork and promotional materials will be on display. The games shown are Grand Theft Auto 3, Pokemon, Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider, and The Sims. Games Culture - USA and Europe - - This area focuses on major areas such as the links between video games and violence (with games like Mortal Kombat 2 and Wolfenstein 3. D playable). There are also profiles of the main developers from around the US and Europe with many of their games playable. Games Culture - Japan - - Here you will find many games that are considered too weird to reach the West, as well as many displays related to anime. Games like Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon, Tokimeki Memorial (a dating simulation), and Go By Train. Character Design - - The designs of the most important gaming characters in history are shown here, including Mario, Sonic The Hedgehog, and Pac- Man.
The influences of their creators are explored. Kids Games - - This areas explores the market for games geared towards children, featuring games like Hey You Pikachu (which was only ever released in the US and Japan), and consoles geared towards children will also be shown. Sound - - This area focuses on game music in three different ways. The first is music through the 8, 1. Dance Dance Revolution, Rez, and Space Channel 5. The second area is devoted to the composers of game music such as Richard Jacques.
The third and final area showcases popular music stars who have contributed to game soundtracks, including Gorillaz and Prodigy. Cinema - - This section looks at the ties between gaming and film. Playable versions of the more successful movie- to- game conversions such as Golden. Eye, Star Wars Rogue Leader, and Tron will be there. The second part of this section is not for the faint- hearted. It shows some of the movies based on games, including clips and promotional materials from "classic" (note the sarcasm) movies like Super Mario Bros, Tomb Raider, and Resident Evil.
It will also show games that have been inspired by film - Metal Gear Solid for example. Multiplayer Games - - Here you will find information on the evolution of multiplayer games from Pong to modern network RPGs. It explores the social aspects of multiplayer gaming and will have playable versions of the most popular and revolutionary PC and console multiplayer games. Magazines - - Here you will find a selection of vintage gaming magazines on display.
James Gooding - Photographs - - In this section there is a selection of photographic portraits of games by James Gooding.
